How Do Braces work?

Braces use mild, constant pressure to shift your teeth into their proper positions over time. The exact way this happens depends on the type of braces you choose.

If you are experiencing alignment issues like crossbite, spacing, crowding, underbite, overbite, or deep bite, you could face challenges in maintaining proper oral hygiene and biting difficulty.

These difficulties may increase the risk of following dental issues:

  • Tooth decay

  • Gum recession

  • Gum bleeding

  • Irregular wear to the enamel

In such cases, improving your tooth alignment with braces can be a viable solution to address these concerns and enhance your oral health.

What To Expect Before Putting Your Braces On?

Before putting on braces, you'll need to see your dentist for consultation first. This initial visit involves:

  1. Talking about your dental and general health.

  2. A dental check-up.

  3. Getting X-rays.

  4. Having molds made of your teeth for the braces.

  5. Creating a treatment plan that specifies the type of braces, what to expect during treatment, how to care for your braces, and the overall schedule.

  • Is braces painful?
Braces can initially lead to discomfort and soreness, which may persist after adjustments. Friction between braces, teeth, and the mouth can cause mouth sores. Do not worry, these issues are temporary and can be eased with pain relievers and dental wax or gels for ulcers.
  • What age is best to start braces?
Though people can get generally braces at any age, whether young or old, orthodontic treatment is most commonly recommended for teenagers around 9 to 14 years old as at this time, all the permanent teeth have already erupted and the jaw is still growing, both of which allows dentist to make adjustments more effectively.
  • How long does braces last?
On average, dental braces are worn for 1 to 3 years, but the length can be shorter or longer depending on your treatment method and orthodontic issue.
  • Is there any alternative ways other than metal braces?
Yes, there are alternatives to traditional metal braces. Some of the common alternatives include: Ceramic Braces: These are similar to metal braces but use clear or tooth-colored brackets, making them less noticeable. Invisalign: Invisalign involves a series of clear, removable aligners that gradually move your teeth. They are nearly invisible and can be removed for eating and brushing. Clear Aligners: Besides Invisalign, there are other clear aligner brands like Angel Aligner that offer similar treatments.
